Gneelivaneswarar Temple
Thirupaingneeli

Presiding Deity:
Gneelivaneswarar

The Gneelivaneswarar Temple, situated in Thiruppaigneeli (also called Thirupanjali) in Tamil Nadu, is a revered Shiva temple renowned for its connection to marriage and longevity. Located about 20 km north of Tiruchirappalli, this ancient temple is one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams, glorified by the Tamil saint-poets Appar, Sundarar, and Thirugnanasambandar.

Deities and Legend

The primary deity is Lord Shiva, worshipped as Gneelivaneswarar, a self-manifested lingam. He is also known by names such as Aaraniya Vallaver and Kathali Vasanthar. His consort, Goddess Parvati, is known as Visalakshi or Neelnedunkanni Amman. The temple also features a rare and significant shrine dedicated to Lord Yama, the god of death.

According to legend, Lord Shiva defeated Yama in Thirukadaiyur to save his devotee Markandeya. This caused an imbalance, disrupting the cycle of life and death. To restore order, Yama was reborn as a child in Thirupanjali, as ordained by Lord Shiva. Another legend involves the saint Appar, who was tired and hungry on his way to the temple. Shiva, disguised as a hunter, offered him food and water from a banana grove, giving him the name Kathali Vasanthar, "Lord of the Banana Garden".

Significance and Remedies

The Gneelivaneswarar Temple is considered "South Kailash" and a powerful parihara sthalam (remedy site) for several issues.

Longevity: Devotees pray at the shrine of Yama, particularly for blessings related to long life.

Marriage obstacles: The temple is a popular destination for those facing delays or hindrances in marriage. Devotees perform a special ritual by tying a knot around a banana tree to seek a speedy and happy marriage.

Child boon: Worshippers also visit to pray for the blessing of progeny.

Navagraha remedies: Uniquely, the temple has no separate shrine for the Navagrahas (nine planets). Instead, the nine steps leading to the main shrine are considered the Navagrahas, and devotees offer prayers here for astrological relief.
