The Kamakshi Amman Temple, located in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India, is a highly revered Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi. As one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, it is believed to be where the navel of Goddess Sati fell after her body was dismembered by Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra. The temple is a significant center of Shaktism, a Hindu tradition focused on worshipping the Goddess. It holds the unique distinction in Kanchipuram of being the only major temple dedicated to a Goddess, unlike many other temples in the area which house deities like Lord Shiva or Vishnu.
Deities and legend
The main deity worshipped at the temple is Goddess Kamakshi, a form of Goddess Parvati. Kamakshi is depicted in a seated yogic posture (Padmasana), holding a sugarcane bow, lotus, parrot, and flower arrows in her four hands. The name "Kamakshi" is said to be derived from the Sanskrit words "Ka" (Saraswati - Goddess of Education), "Ma" (Lakshmi - Goddess of Wealth), and "Akshi" (Eye), implying the Goddess whose eyes represent Saraswati and Lakshmi. One legend associated with the temple describes Goddess Parvati undertaking severe penance by standing on a needle tip amidst five fires (Panchakagni) and praying to Lord Shiva under a mango tree near the Vegavati River. Impressed by her devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before her and accepted her as his consort, symbolizing the sacred union of Shakti and Shiva. Another legend speaks of Adi Shankaracharya installing the Sri Chakra Yantra in front of the idol to pacify the Goddess's fierce form and establish a more peaceful atmosphere for worship.
