Thenupuriswarar Temple
Patteeswaram

Presiding Deity:
Thenupuriswarar

The Thenupuriswarar Temple, located in the village of Patteeswaram near Kumbakonam, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is a significant site known for its rich history, unique legends, and special remedies that draw devotees from all over.

Location and deities

The temple is situated approximately 8 kilometers from Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu.

Deities: The presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is worshipped as Thenupuriswarar and resides in the form of a lingam. His consort, Goddess Parvati, is known as Gnanambigai or Somakamalambigai. The temple also has a renowned shrine for the goddess Durga, who is venerated as a protector and known for her gentle demeanor (Shanta Swarupi).

Brief legend

According to local lore, the village is named after Patti, the daughter of the divine cow Kamadhenu, who worshipped Lord Shiva here. Another famous legend involves the child saint Thirugnanasambandar. When Sambandar visited the temple, Lord Shiva, anticipating his devotee's arrival under the hot sun, instructed his servants to create a pearl canopy (Muthu pandal) to provide shade. To allow the young saint an unobstructed view of the sanctum, Shiva also instructed his mount, Nandi, to move slightly aside. This is why the Nandi here is positioned away from the central axis.

Significance

Architectural marvel: Believed to have been built by the Cholas and later renovated by the Nayaks, the temple is an exemplary display of Dravidian architecture, with five majestic gopurams (gateway towers).

Religious importance: As a Paadal Petra Sthalam, the temple is glorified in the Tevaram, a 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical work. The Navagrahas (nine planetary deities) are also uniquely positioned here, all facing the Sun god, Surya.

Historical connections: The temple is linked to several Hindu legends, including Lord Rama receiving absolution from Sayagathi dosha for killing Vali and Sage Markandeya performing worship.
