A revered and ancient Hindu temple, the Sri Agneeswara Temple is located in the village of Nalladai, near Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu's Mayiladuthurai district. Built in 1147 during the reign of King Rajaraja Chola II, this sprawling, two-acre temple is noted for its Dravidian architecture and three majestic towers.
Deities
Presiding Deity (Moolavar): Lord Agneeswarar, a form of Lord Shiva, who faces west—an unusual and highly powerful aspect.
Consort (Amman): Goddess Sundaranayaki, whose shrine faces south.
Associated with Bharani Star: The temple is the designated shrine for those born under the Bharani birth star (Nakshatra), and Lord Agneeswarar is also known as Bharaninathar.
Brief legend
According to legend, Sage Mruganda Maharishi performed a great Yagna (fire ritual) for Lord Shiva in this place. The local weavers offered three fine silk cloths, which the sage threw into the fire pit to the amazement of the crowd. He then instructed them to go to the sanctum sanctorum, where they were astonished to find the silk cloths draped freshly around the Shivalinga. The sage explained that the offering was directly delivered to the Lord by Bharani Rudragni, a powerful form of fire, hence the temple's association with the Bharani star.
Significance
A unique feature of this temple is the water-filled channel at the base of the Shivalinga, which serves to cool down the intense heat radiated by the deity's fiery aspect. The westward-facing stance of the deity is believed to bestow exceptional benefits upon devotees.
Remedies
Devotees worship at this temple to seek relief from the negative effects of planetary positions, particularly those born under the Bharani Nakshatra. The temple is especially renowned for addressing obstacles related to marriage and for granting the boon of a child. Worshipping Lord Agneeswarar is believed to resolve these issues and lead to a more prosperous and fulfilling life.
