Sankat Mochan Temple, Varanasi
Varanasi

Presiding Deity:
Lord Hanuman

The Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is a revered Hindu temple in the holy city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Located on the banks of the Assi River, this shrine was established by the revered saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas in the early 16th century. The temple's name, "Sankat Mochan," translates to "the reliever of troubles," a name that directly reflects the deity's role.

The primary deity of the temple is Lord Hanuman, a figure in Hindu mythology known for his immense strength, courage, and unwavering devotion to Lord Rama. A unique feature is the main idol of Hanuman, which faces his beloved Lord Rama. Idols of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana are also enshrined here, underscoring Hanuman's selfless devotion.

Legend holds that Tulsidas established the temple after having a divine vision of Lord Hanuman at this very spot. It is also believed that Tulsidas wrote much of his epic, the Ramcharitmanas, under a sacred fig tree located on the temple grounds. Devotees visit the temple to seek relief from various problems, including personal struggles, health issues, and negative planetary influences. Many believe that worshipping Lord Hanuman can counteract the ill effects of the planets Saturn (Shani) and Mars (Mangal).

Worshippers perform rituals such as chanting the Hanuman Chalisa and Sunderkand and offering besan ke ladoo (a sweet) and marigold garlands to the deity. Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered especially auspicious for offering prayers. The temple also hosts the annual "Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh," a classical music and dance festival that attracts performers from around the world.
