The Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple in Palani, also known as the Palani Murugan Temple, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, one of the six abodes of Murugan according to Naman Darshan. Situated atop the Sivagiri hill in Palani, Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu, it holds deep spiritual significance and attracts millions of devotees annually. 

Deities

The primary deity worshipped here is Lord Murugan, who manifests as Dandayudhapani Swami, representing the Lord with a Staff in his hand. The idol, crafted by the Siddhar Bogar, is unique as it is made from Navapashanam (an amalgam of nine poisonous substances) believed to possess healing properties. Shrines to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati can also be found within the temple .

Legend

The temple's legend revolves around Lord Murugan's youthful renunciation. As the story goes, Sage Narada presented Shiva with a special fruit, "Gnana Palam" (Fruit of Knowledge). A competition was held between Lord Murugan and his brother Ganesha to circle the world three times to earn the fruit. While Murugan embarked on his journey atop his peacock, Ganesha shrewdly circled his parents (symbolizing the world) and was awarded the fruit. Feeling cheated, Murugan renounced all material possessions and settled in Palani as a hermit. It's believed that Lord Shiva and Parvati visited and told him "Pazham Nee", meaning "You are the Fruit". 

Significance and Remedies

Palani is one of the six Abodes of Murugan (Arupadaiveedu). Devotees visit seeking blessings for various aspects of life, including marriage, child boon, and relief from illnesses and other physical ailments. The temple's Panchamritham, a holy mixture of five ingredients (banana, honey, ghee, jaggery, and cardamom), is highly sought after as a prasadam and is believed to have medicinal properties and to imbibe the energies of the Navapashanam idol. Applying sandal paste left overnight on the idol (Rakk?la Chanda?am) is also considered a miraculous healer. The temple also celebrates major festivals like Thai Poosam, Panguni Uttaram, and Skanda Shashti with grand ceremonies and special rituals. Pilgrims often carry "kavadi", a physical burden, as a form of worship and seeking the Lord's grace.
