Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple
Varanasi

Presiding Deity:
Shiva

The temple is situated in the Daranagar locality of Visheshwarganj, Varanasi. Located approximately 1.7 kilometers west of Gola Ghat, its structural presence is subtly tucked away within the bustling city lanes. While the deep inner shrines are thousands of years old, the visible, outer structure of the temple was built during the 18th century.
Deities
The main deity is a highly venerated Shivling worshipped as Mrityunjay Mahadev, meaning "The Great God who is Victorious over Death". The temple campus holds distinct prominence for featuring various secondary, highly powerful subterranean Shivlings. Uniquely, the primary temple layout does not feature a Nandi statue at its entrance.
Brief Legend
According to the Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana, the deity is historically referred to as Apa Mrityu Hareshwar (the Lord who wards off untimely deaths). The primary legend connects to Dhanvantari, the divine avatar of Lord Vishnu and the cosmic God of Ayurvedic medicine. It is firmly believed that Dhanvantari poured his ultimate therapeutic herbs, medicines, and spiritual secrets into the ancient well located inside the complex, known as the Dhanvantari Koop (or Kalodak Koop).
Significance and Worship Remedies
The shrine holds supreme importance across India as a localized epicenter for intense healing practices:
Warding Off Untimely Death: Devotees whole-heartedly perform or sponsor Mrityunjay Path and Mahamrityunjay Mantra Japa (ideally 1.25 lakh times) here to convert terminal diagnoses or fatal threats into extended life.
Curing Chronic Illnesses: Pilgrims sprinkle or consume the miraculous water directly from the Dhanvantari Kua as an absolute remedy to eradicate chronic physical ailments and spiritual blocks.
Fulfilling Intentions: A unique local ritual requires hanging a coconut directly over the Shivling to clear severe distress, which is brought back home once the desire manifests successfully.
