The temple is situated in the Bhelupur region of Varanasi, right next to a historic rectangular pond known as the Durga Kund. Built in the 18th century by Rani Bhabani of Natore, it showcases North Indian Nagara-style architecture. The entire structure is stained in vibrant red ochre, a hue symbolizing supreme power, valor, and cosmic energy.

Deities

The inner sanctum houses a powerful, self-manifested (Swayambhu) icon of Maa Durga. In Kashi, she is also worshipped as Kushmanda Devi, the creator of the cosmic egg. The temple complex features secondary shrines for Goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kali.

Brief Legend

According to the Devi-Bhagavata Purana, Prince Sudarshan won the hand of Princess Shashikala in a secret marriage. When rival kings waged war against them, Sudarshan prayed to Maa Bhagwati. The Goddess descended on a lion, slaughtered the enemies, and pledged to stay back as the protector of Kashi.

Significance  

As a premier tantric and Shakti center, the temple draws thousands of pilgrims, especially during Navratri celebrations. Devotees perform Chandi Havan and offer red flowers and vermillion (sindoor) as specific remedies to achieve targeted spiritual and material relief.
