Vaitheeswaran Koil, also known as Pullirukuvelur, is a revered Hindu temple located in the Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu, India. It's situated near the town of Sirkazhi and roughly 17 km from Mayiladuthurai. The temple's primary deity is Lord Shiva, worshipped as Vaidyanathar or Vaitheeswaran, which means "God of healing". His consort is Goddess Thaiyalnayaki, who carries a pot of medicinal oil to cure diseases. A significant aspect of this temple is its connection to Angaraka (Mars), as it's one of the nine Navagraha (nine planets) temples dedicated to him.
Legend
Several legends are associated with Vaitheeswaran Koil. One prominent story recounts how Angaraka, the planet Mars, was afflicted with leprosy. He prayed to Lord Shiva at this very spot, and Shiva, in his form as Vaidyanathaswamy, cured him. This is why the temple is known as Angaraka Sthalam, a place specifically for Mars worship and healing. Another legend from the Ramayana connects the temple to Jatayu, the mythical bird, whose last rites were performed here by Lord Rama.
Significance and Remedies
Vaitheeswaran Koil is renowned for its believed healing powers. Devotees throng the temple seeking remedies for various ailments, particularly skin diseases and leprosy, as the legend suggests. The Siddhamirtham tank within the temple complex is considered sacred, believed to contain healing properties, and devotees take a holy dip in its waters to cure diseases. Beyond physical ailments, the temple is also sought for relief from the adverse effects of Mars (Chevvai Dosham or Mangal Dosha) in astrological charts. Worshiping Angaraka with specific rituals, offering red cloth and Bengal gram (kadalai paruppu), particularly on Tuesdays, is believed to neutralize the negative impacts of Mars.
