The Bhavani Temple at Tuljapur is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Goddess Bhavani, a formidable form of Shakti. The temple is in the Dharashiv district of Maharashtra, situated atop the Yamunachala Hill of the Balaghat range. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and holds immense cultural significance, especially for Maratha history.
Deities and legends
The central deity is Goddess Bhavani, a three-foot-tall, self-manifested granite idol with eight arms holding various weapons. A prominent legend from the Skanda Purana recounts how the goddess rescued her devotee, the sage Anubhuti, from the demon Kukur. The goddess killed the demon, who had taken the form of a buffalo, and subsequently came to be known as Tulja Bhavani. She is also revered as the Kuldevi, or family deity, of many clans in Maharashtra, including the Bhosale royal family. According to lore, she gifted a divine sword, the Bhavani Talwar, to the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to aid him in his battles.
Significance and remedies
The temple represents the divine feminine power that protects righteousness and destroys evil. Devotees come to the temple seeking divine blessings for various remedies. They pray to the goddess for strength, courage, prosperity, and protection from negative influences, evil desires, and internal conflicts like ego and jealousy. By performing rituals like Abhishek (ritual bathing), offering flowers and fruits, and chanting mantras, devotees connect with her divine energy, believing she will guide them through life's challenges. The temple and its surrounding water tanks, including the Kallol Tirth and Gomukh Tirth, are considered holy and are believed to cleanse devotees of their sins.
