The Bhagavathy Kumari Amman Temple, located in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, is a venerated Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Devi Kanya Kumari, a form of Parvati. Situated at the southernmost tip of mainland India, the temple overlooks the confluence of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean. It is one of the 108 Shakti Peethas, places where pieces of the goddess Sati's body are said to have fallen.
Deities
The presiding deity is Devi Kanya Kumari, the "virgin goddess," depicted as a young girl in a standing posture with a rosary. Her sparkling ruby nose ring is famously bright and is the subject of several legends. The temple complex also includes smaller shrines for deities such as Lord Ganesha, Lord Ayyappa, and Lord Surya Deva.
Legend
The temple's legend is tied to the demon Banasura, who could only be killed by a virgin. To protect the gods and defeat the demon, Goddess Parvati took the form of Kanya Kumari and performed penance. She was set to marry Lord Shiva, but the divine sage Narada, knowing the marriage would prevent Banasura's death, tricked Shiva into missing the auspicious time. A heartbroken Kanya Kumari decided to remain a virgin and later slayed the demon in battle.
Significance and remedies
The temple is a sacred pilgrimage site that dates back over 3,000 years. Devotees worship here for various remedies, including:
Protection and wellbeing: Devotees seek the goddess's blessings for protection from evil and for general prosperity.
Removal of mental rigidity: It is believed that praying to the goddess in deep devotion helps in shedding mental barriers and achieving clarity of mind.
Absolution of sins: According to one legend, taking a dip at the confluence of the oceans before visiting the temple helps in absolving oneself of sins.
