The Girijatmaj Vinayak Temple is a rock-cut shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha, located on Lenyadri Hill near Junnar in Maharashtra. It is the sixth temple visited on the revered Ashtavinayak pilgrimage tour. The name Girijatmaj comes from "Girija," another name for Goddess Parvati, and "Atmaj," meaning son, as this is the site where Ganesha is believed to have been born to his mother.
Brief legend
According to mythology, Goddess Parvati performed severe penance for twelve years in a cave on Lenyadri hill to beget a son. When she formed an idol from the dirt of her body on the day of Bhadrapada Shudh Chaturthi, it came to life, and Lord Ganesha was born. Ganesha is said to have resided here for fifteen years and defeated several demons sent to kill him.
Location and deities
The temple is situated atop a hill and is part of a complex of 18 Buddhist caves dating back to the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. To reach the shrine, devotees must climb around 300 rock-cut steps. The deity, a form of Lord Ganesha as an infant, is not a separate idol but is carved directly onto the cave wall, with its trunk turned to the left. The temple's large, pillared hall is a notable feature, carved entirely from a single rock.
Significance and remedies
Worshipping Lord Girijatmaj is believed to bring wisdom, prosperity, and remove obstacles from one's life. Devotees undertake the pilgrimage to this temple as part of the Ashtavinayak Yatra to seek divine blessings and fulfillment of desires. Specific remedies include performing abhishekam (ritual bathing of the idol) and special prayers. For the childless, worshipping here is particularly significant, given the legend of Parvati's penance to have a son. The temple is a major site of worship, especially during Ganesh Chaturthi and Ganesh Jayanti, when thousands of pilgrims visit.
