The Ulagalandha Perumal Temple in Kanchipuram is a revered sanctuary dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped as Ulagalantha Perumal, and his consort, Goddess Amuthavalli. Built in the Dravidian style, this ancient temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred abodes of Vishnu) and is located near the Kamakshi Amman Temple. 

Legend and significance

The temple commemorates the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu, in which he appeared as a dwarf Brahmin to subdue the arrogant Asura king, Mahabali. When Vamana asked for three paces of land, Mahabali generously granted his request. Vamana then grew into his colossal form, Trivikrama, covering the earth with his first step and the heavens with his second. For his third step, Mahabali offered his own head, recognizing Vamana's divine nature. The gigantic, 35-foot-tall image of Ulagalantha Perumal captures this moment, depicting him with one foot on Mahabali's head.
