Chathurmuga Murugan Temple
Dindugal

Presiding Deity:
Subrahmanyaswamy

The Chathurmuga Murugan Temple is an ancient and unique shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, located in Chinnalapatti, near Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. The temple is a significant pilgrimage site because it is one of the only places where the primary deity, Lord Murugan, is depicted with four faces.

Deities

The main deity is Chathurmuga Murugan, an extraordinary form of Lord Murugan with four faces. These faces represent the four Vedas and Murugan's command of supreme knowledge. The idol is also depicted wearing a Gauri Shankar Rudraksha mala, adding to its sacred uniqueness. The temple also has shrines for other deities, but the four-faced Murugan is the central focus.

Legend

The legend behind this rare form involves the sage Vishwamitra. After intense rivalry and hardship, Vishwamitra regretted his actions. He felt remorseful for having forgotten his quest for divine grace. It is said that at this spot, a voice identified as Vishwamitra's came from the heavens, revealing that Murugan and the goddess had removed his pride and ignorance. The sage, now enlightened, was given the title of Brahmarishi by Sage Vasistha. The tale highlights the temple as a place where one can seek forgiveness and gain divine grace, especially with the help of the four-faced Murugan, a symbol of ultimate knowledge.

Significance and Remedies

The temple's significance lies in its unique iconography and the belief that worshipping the four-faced Murugan offers profound remedies and blessings.
