Sangupani Vinayagar Temple
Kanchipuram

Presiding Deity:
Sangupani Vinayaga

The Sangupani Vinayagar Temple in Kanchipuram is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha, renowned for its ancient origins and unique iconography. Located near the famous Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple in Ayyampettai, Kanchipuram, it is believed to predate many other significant temples in the city. The presiding deity, Sangupani Vinayagar, is a self-manifested (Svayambhu) form of Ganesha, distinctively holding a conch (sangam) in his hand, which gives the temple its name.

Brief legend and significance

According to local lore, the temple's name is tied to Ganesha's defeat of a demon named Sangasuran. As the story goes, the demon hid in the sea in the form of a conch. Ganesha, in his form as Mayuresa, defeated him and then held the demon's conch as a symbol of victory. He is thus known as Sangupani Vinayagar, or "the one who holds the conch".

The temple's significance is enhanced by its age and the belief that it existed even before the Ekambareshwarar and Kamakshi Amman temples. The presence of a self-manifested deity draws devotees who seek a direct and powerful connection with the divine.
