The Nageswaran Temple, also known as the Nageswaraswamy Temple, is a revered Hindu shrine located in the temple town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. Built in the 9th century by the Chola king Aditya I, the temple is an architectural marvel of the Chola dynasty.
Deities
Presiding Deity: Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Nageswarar, meaning "Lord of the Serpents," in the form of a lingam. He is also known as Vilvaranyeswarar.
Consort: Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Periyanayagi or Pragannayagi.
Other Shrines: The temple complex also includes shrines for Lord Surya, Lord Ganesh (known as Jwara Hara Vinayagar), and a unique Nataraja shrine designed as a chariot.
Legend
According to legend, the mythological serpent king Adisesha, exhausted from holding the weight of the Earth, came to this place to worship Lord Shiva to regain his strength. Lord Shiva appeared and blessed him, and thus came to be known as Nageswarar. The temple is also one of the places where the Sun God (Surya) worshipped Lord Shiva to get rid of a curse.
Significance
The temple's architecture is significant for its astronomical alignment. During the Tamil month of Chithirai (April/May), the sun's rays fall directly on the presiding deity for the first three days, a phenomenon considered Lord Surya's worship of Lord Shiva. The shrine of Nataraja, designed like a chariot, is another unique feature. The temple is also classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam, having been mentioned in the hymns of the 7th-century Nayanar saints.
