The Arulmigu Masaniamman Temple is a revered shrine in Anaimalai, near Pollachi in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. Located at the confluence of the Aliyar River and the Uppar stream, it is known for its unique reclining idol of the goddess.
Deities and legend
The temple's presiding deity is Goddess Masaniamman, a powerful manifestation of Goddess Shakti, also known as Adi Parashakti. The 15-foot-long deity is depicted in a unique reclining pose, with four arms holding a snake, skull, drum, and trident. The temple complex also features shrines to Neethi Kal (the "stone of justice") and Mahamuniappan.
The legend of the temple traces back to a cruel king named Nannuran who ruled the region. He forbade his subjects from taking fruit from his mango grove on pain of death. A woman who ate a mango, unaware of the decree, was executed by the king. The villagers, outraged by the injustice, killed the king and built a shrine to the woman, where she was deified as Masaniamman.
Significance and remedies
The temple is a place of spiritual importance and serves as a court of justice for devotees.
For justice: Devotees seeking to recover stolen property or redress betrayal grind red chilies on the Neethi Kal and apply the paste to seek divine justice.
For resolution: For other issues, devotees write their grievances on paper and tie it to the hands of the reclining deity. It is believed their problems will be resolved within 90 days.
For women's health and fertility: The temple's special Pachilam Marundu prasad is considered a remedy for girls experiencing physical issues during puberty. Women also consume this prasad and tie a black thread from the temple for a child boon and protection from black magic.
For healing: It is believed that walking around the trident in front of the main sanctum can cure illnesses.
