The Sakshinatheswarar Temple is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated in the village of Thiruppurambiyam, near Kumbakonam, in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. The primary deity is worshipped as Sakshinathar, and his consort, Goddess Parvati, is known here as Ikshuvani or Kuraivilla Azhagi (the one with unsurpassed beauty).
Brief Legend
The temple's name is rooted in a legend where Lord Shiva acted as a witness (Sakshi in Tamil). A Chettiar merchant married a second wife, and during a property dispute, his elder wife challenged the validity of the marriage. The younger wife sought divine intervention, and Lord Shiva, along with a sacred Vanni tree, appeared as witnesses to validate her marriage. Another notable story associated with the temple is that of the Pralayam Katha Vinayagar (Ganesha who saved from the deluge). During the great deluge, this shrine remained unaffected, and it is said that the Ganesha idol, made from ocean materials, miraculously absorbs all honey poured during its abhishekam.
Significance
The Sakshinatheswarar Temple is a site of historical and religious significance. It is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams, praised in 7th-century devotional hymns of the Nayanmars. The temple is also one of the 24 sacred places associated with the worship of Lord Dakshinamurthy. Built largely during the Nayak period, its history also connects to the Chola dynasty. King Aditya I erected a temple here to commemorate his victory in the Battle of Thiruppurambiyam.
Remedies
Devotees visit the temple to seek divine assistance for specific life issues. People facing marriage obstacles or seeking a child worship the deities for a favorable outcome. Prayers are also offered for educational advancements. The worship of Lord Dakshinamurthy is believed to bring clarity and wisdom.
