The Sri Thothadrinathan Temple, also known as the Vanamamalai Perumal Temple, is a revered Hindu temple located in Nanguneri, in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, or sacred shrines dedicated to Vishnu, and is one of eight Swayam Vyakta Kshetrams where Vishnu is believed to have manifested on his own. The temple is managed by the Vanamamalai Mutt, a prominent Sri Vaishnava institution. 

Deities

Presiding Deity (Moolavar): Thothadrinathan, also known as Vanamamalai Perumal or Deivanayakan, is depicted in a seated posture under the canopy of the serpent deity Adisesha.

Consorts (Thayar): Sridevi and Bhoodevi are seated on either side of the Lord. The consort is also worshipped in a separate shrine as Varamangai Thayar.

Additional Deities: The temple uniquely features 11 Swayambhu (self-manifested) deities, including Thothadrinathan, Sridevi, Bhoodevi, sages Brighu and Markandeya, Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), and the celestial dancers Urvashi and Thilothama. 

Legend and Significance

Legend says that after Vishnu killed the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, the earth was defiled by their bad odor. Bhoomadevi (Mother Earth) regained her purity by praying to Vishnu at this very spot. Another tale recounts how a childless King Kaaarya was blessed with a child after performing daily oil ablutions to the deity, an act that continues today. The oil is a central part of the temple's daily rituals and spiritual significance. 

Remedies

Devotees primarily worship at this temple to receive blessings from a consecrated medicinal oil.

The Medicinal Oil: The presiding deity is given a daily ablution (Thirumanjanam) with gingelly oil and sandalwood oil. This oil is collected in a 25-foot deep well called the Setruthamarai Theertham.

Purpose: The oil is believed to possess potent medicinal properties. It is collected and given to devotees who apply it on their bodies or ingest a few drops to cure various skin ailments, joint pains, and arthritis.

Surrender to the Lord (Saranagati): The deity's posture, with one hand pointing to his feet and the other on his lap, signifies the concept of surrender (Saranagati), assuring devotees that all who seek refuge in him will be protected.
