Kariamanickam Perumal Temple
Tirunelveli

Presiding Deity:
Sri Neela Mani Natha

The Kariamanickam Perumal Temple is a unique and ancient Vaishnavite shrine near the Tirunelveli Town railway station, referred to as the "Then Tirupati," or Southern Tirupati. It is particularly revered for its ability to provide remedies for those with afflictions related to the planets Surya (Sun) and Shani (Saturn)

Location

The temple is situated near the banks of the Thamiraparani river, close to the Tirunelveli Town railway station in Tamil Nadu. The temple's sacred tank, Padmanabha Theertham, finds mention in the ancient Tamaraibarani Mahatmiyam, suggesting a heritage of at least 5,000 years.

Deities

The main deity is Neelamani Nathar, a form of Lord Vishnu who manifested as a brilliant blue gem (Neela Mani). The processional deity, or utsava murti, is named Kariya Manickam, lending its name to the temple. The temple is renowned for portraying Lord Vishnu in three distinct postures within its complex:

Neela Mani Nathar: The presiding deity in a standing posture, facing east.

Lakshmi Narayana: In a seated posture, facing south.

Anantha Padmanabha: In a reclining posture.

Legend

The temple's legend traces back to Sage Paila, a disciple of Vyasa, who lived in Tirunelveli. The sage meditated daily, mentally offering a crore (10 million) flowers to Srinivasa Perumal. His profound devotion caused a divine blue gem (Neela Mani) to emerge, from which Lord Srinivasa Perumal appeared. This form of Vishnu became the main deity, Neelamani Nathar.

Significance and remedies

The temple holds immense significance for devotees seeking solutions to problems caused by planetary alignments. The name Kariya Manickam itself signifies the power to overcome the negative influences of both Saturn (Kari) and the Sun (Manickam). Devotees come to this sacred site for specific remedies:

Planetary afflictions (doshas): Worshipping here is believed to provide liberation from all types of planetary curses.

Eyesight problems: The temple is considered a powerful prarthana sthalam (place of prayer) for healing vision-related issues.
