Veyilugandha Vinayagar Temple , located in Uppur village, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, the Veyilukantha Vinayagar Temple is a sacred coastal shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The village itself, also known as Lavanapuram (meaning "salt town"), derives its name from its historical association with salt production. The temple is a significant pilgrimage site and is believed to have been constructed by the Sethupathy kings.
Deities and Legend
The main deity is Veyilukantha Vinayagar, or "the Ganesha who loves the sun". The temple's unique name originates from a captivating legend. According to lore, the Sun god (Surya) received a curse from Lord Shiva for an offense committed by Daksha. Seeking expiation, Surya performed intense penance at Uppur. Pleased with his devotion, Ganesha granted him a boon, and to this day, the sun's rays directly fall upon the main deity during the periods of Dakshinayana and Uttarayana. It is also believed that Lord Rama worshipped Vinayagar here before his journey to Lanka. A rare feature of this temple is that Lord Ganesha is depicted with his two consorts, Siddhi and Buddhi, which is uncommon in South Indian tradition.
