Mandaikaadu Baghavathy Amman Temple
Nagarcoil

Presiding Deity:
Bhagavathy Amman

The Mandaikadu Bhagavathi Amman Temple is a revered coastal shrine in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, celebrated for its unique traditions and miraculous lore. Situated near the seashore of Colachel, it is frequently called the "Women's Sabarimala" because of the large number of female devotees who undertake special pilgrimages. The temple's architecture follows a simple, traditional Kerala style.

Deities and brief legend
The main deity is Bhagavathi Amman, a form of Goddess Parvati. The idol is a 15-foot-tall, naturally formed anthill that is believed to grow slightly each year. According to legend, the great philosopher Adi Shankaracharya performed a sacred Srichakra puja at this site and later attained samadhi. After his passing, an anthill began to grow where the Srichakra was placed, which devotees started to worship as the Goddess. The Kerala king Marthanda Varma, upon hearing of the divine anthill, constructed the temple to protect it.
Significance and rituals
The temple is a major spiritual center, particularly for women from Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Like the Sabarimala pilgrimage, women carry an irumudi (a cloth bundle containing offerings) to the temple. The most important festival is the ten-day Maasi Kodai festival, which attracts a massive crowd in the Tamil month of Maasi (February-March). A unique ritual is the Pongala, where women cook sweet rice as an offering to the Goddess.
Remedies
Devotees worship Bhagavathi Amman to receive blessings and remedy various problems. It is believed that the Goddess grants wishes and offers protection from negative energies and evil influences. During the new moon (Amavasya), special rites are performed by priests to bless devotees. Praying to Bhagavathi Amman is also sought for material wealth, a harmonious marriage, good health, and blessings for children.
