The Gauthameswarar Temple in Kumbakonam is an ancient Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, located on the eastern bank of the Mahamaham tank. While another Gauthameswarar temple exists in Kanchipuram, this one in Kumbakonam holds special significance, particularly during the Mahamaham festival, which occurs once every 12 years.

Presiding Deity (Moolavar): Gauthameswarar (Lord Shiva). A notable feature of the lingam is a snake mark on its chest.Consort (Amman): Soundara Nayaki (Goddess Parvati).Other Deities: The temple complex also houses shrines for various other deities, including Lord Bhairavar. 

Legend

The temple's name is derived from Sage Gautama, who worshipped Lord Shiva here to cleanse himself of the sin of cow slaughter. The worship took place at the very spot where the thread around a divine pot (kumbha), which held the seeds of creation and was broken by Shiva, fell. 

Significance and remedies

The Gauthameswarar Temple is one of the 12 Shiva temples in Kumbakonam connected with the Mahamaham festival. Devotees worship here for various purposes: 

Relief from fear: Worshipping Lord Bhairavar on Ashtami days is believed to provide relief from fear.

Alleviation of doshas: The temple offers remedies for various afflictions, or doshas, including Graha Dosha Nivarti (planetary afflictions) and Rahu Dosham.

Marital and progeny issues: It is believed that worshipping here provides remedies for marital problems and infertility.

Protection from curses: The temple is considered a remedy for naaga dosham (serpent curses).
