Bhairaveswarar Temple
Kumbakonam

Presiding Deity:
Bhairava

The Bhairaveswarar Temple, located in the village of Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district, is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The village itself was formerly known as Bhairavapuram, signifying its deep connection to the deity.

Deities

Presiding Deity: The main deity is Lord Bhairaveswarar, a form of Lord Shiva. His idol is in the form of a swayambhu lingam, a naturally manifested lingam.

Goddess: The temple's goddess is Bhairaveswari. Uniquely, her shrine contains only her face.

Other Deities: The temple complex also features shrines to other deities, including an eight-handed Bhairava and the 64 forms of Bhairava, each seated on their own peeta (pedestal).

Brief legend

According to legend, this temple is considered the origin point (moola sthanam) of all 64 forms of Bhairava. Lord Shani (Saturn) is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here to escape the tyranny of the demon king Ravana, who had subdued all the Navagrahas (nine planets). During this time, Lord Shani's son, Kuligan (or Mandi), was born in this very place. Later, Lord Rama, informed by Shiva of the opportune time, killed Ravana during Kuligan's birth.

Significance

The temple is considered a highly sacred site for the worship of Bhairava, a powerful manifestation of Shiva. The presence of 64 peetas, representing the seats of the 64 Bhairavas who performed penance here, reinforces its importance as the origin of all Bhairava forms. Devotees revere this temple as the place where Bhairava manifested from Shiva himself.

Remedies

Devotees worship Bhairaveswarar to receive remedies for various issues:

Overcoming debt and adversity: Prayers are offered to overcome financial problems, remove debts, and find success in legal matters.
