Sri Bhava Oushadeeswara Temple
Thiruthuraipoondi

Presiding Deity:
Shiva

The Sri Bhava Oushadeeswara Temple is a revered Shiva temple located in the town of Thiruthuraipoondi, near Mannargudi in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. It is also known as Sri Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple, referring to its healing powers.

Deities

  • The presiding deity is Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Sri Bhava Oushadeeswarar. The name signifies his role as the "Lord of Medicine who cures diseases" and controls the "state of mind" (Bhava).
  • The main shrine houses a swayambu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam.

Legend

According to legend, the 9th-century Saivite saint Sundarar visited the temple. He had previously broken a promise made to his wife, which caused Lord Shiva to blind him. When Sundarar approached this temple, he prayed for his sight to be restored. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva did not grant his sight back but instead blessed him with a walking stick to aid his journey. It is believed that the bull (Nandi) statue at the temple has a broken right horn as a result of Sundarar's stick hitting it in a moment of frustration.

Significance and Remedies

  • The temple is considered a sacred center of "disease-curing energy".
  • It is a significant place of worship for individuals born under the Ashwini Nakshatra. Performing a special puja or abhishekam with sacred herbs on their star day is believed to enhance their inner light and healing capabilities.
  • Devotees born under other stars also visit to seek blessings for recovery from illness. This is especially done on Tuesdays, Saturdays, or on the Ashwini star day.
  • Worship and rituals at the temple are believed to imbue the surrounding holy waters and plants with medicinal qualities.
  • Taking a holy bath in the temple pond is considered beneficial for health.
  • Circumambulating the temple's associated sacred tree, the Kuchala (Strychnine) tree, is said to fulfill wishes and remove obstacles.
