Magudeshwarar Temple
Kodumudi

Presiding Deity:
Magudeshwarar

The Magudeshwarar Temple is a revered Hindu temple complex located in Kodumudi, a town in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu. Situated on the banks of the Kaveri River, this ancient site is praised in the Thevaram hymns and is known as a Trimurthy Kovil, housing shrines for the trinity of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma.

Deities

The primary deities are Lord Shiva, known here as Magudeshwarar or Kodumudi Nathar, and his consort, Goddess Parvati, worshipped as Vadivudainayaki or Soundaryanayaki. Other major shrines are dedicated to Veeranarayana Perumal (Lord Vishnu) and Lord Brahma. A rare idol of Lord Vyakrapada Vinayaka, featuring a tiger's feet, is also present.

Brief legend

According to legend, a competition arose between the serpent Adiseshan and the wind god Vayu over who was stronger. When Vayu blew with all his might, the peak of Mount Meru, held tightly by Adiseshan, shattered into pieces. A diamond from the mountain's peak fell in Kodumudi, forming the Shiva Lingam at this site. The temple is also associated with the sage Agastya, whose fingerprints are believed to be visible on the deity after he stopped the idol from sinking into the ground.

Significance

The Magudeshwarar Temple is highly significant for several reasons:

It is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams, revered in the devotional songs of the Nayanar saints.

The presence of shrines for all three gods of the Trimurti makes it a rare and sacred destination.

The temple is considered a powerful parikara sthalam (a place for remedial rituals) to resolve various planetary afflictions.

Remedies for devotees

Devotees visit the temple to seek remedies for specific issues:

Naga Dosha: The temple is especially known for alleviating the adverse effects of serpent planets (Naga Dosha). Worship of the Naga idols under the ancient Vanni tree is a common practice for this purpose.

Marriage and child boons: Many people perform abhishekam with Kaveri water to a Vinayaka idol, specifically seeking blessings for marriage and children.

Planetary afflictions: Devotees conduct Navagraha pujas to mitigate the negative influences of the planets.
