Sri Naganathaswamy Temple (Rahu Sthalam)
Tirunageswaram

Presiding Deity:
Sri Naganathaswamy

Sri Naganathaswamy Temple located in the village of Thirunageswaram, near Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, the Sri Naganathaswamy Temple is a significant Hindu pilgrimage site, particularly for those seeking relief from the astrological effects of Rahu. This ancient temple is revered as one of the nine Navagraha (nine planets) temples dedicated specifically to Rahu, the North Lunar Node.

Deities and legend

The temple's presiding deity is Lord Shiva, worshipped as Naganathar and represented by a Shiva Lingam. His consort, Parvati, is known here as Giri Gujambigai and Piraisoodi Amman. Unlike most depictions of Rahu with a serpent face, at the Sri Naganathaswamy Temple, Rahu Bhagavan is uniquely depicted with a human face and accompanied by his two consorts, Nagakanni and Nagavalli.

Legend has it that the mythological serpents Adishesha, Dakshan, and Karkotaka worshipped Lord Shiva at this very location, which is believed to be the origin of the name "Thirunageswaram". The region was also known as Senbaranya Kshetram due to the abundance of Senbaga trees where Adishesha performed penance, leading to Lord Shiva's appearance and his blessing upon the serpent king, hence the name Naganathar. Another legend states that Lord Rahu himself worshipped Lord Shiva at this temple to attain his planetary status after having consumed Amritham (nectar) through deception and subsequently being cut in two by Lord Vishnu. Surya and Chandra (Sun and Moon) had reported his act to Lord Vishnu.

Significance and remedies

The Sri Naganathaswamy Temple holds immense significance for those facing challenges due to Rahu Dosham (malefic effects of Rahu in one's horoscope),  Devotees visit this Rahu Sthalam to seek relief from issues such as delays in marriage, childlessness, marital problems, health problems like nervous and leprosy issues, as well as the adverse effects of Kala Sarpa Dosham and Sarpa Dosham. It is believed that performing a milk abhishekam (sacred bathing ceremony) for Rahu during Rahu Kalam, particularly on Sundays, can mitigate these negative influences. A remarkable feature of the temple is that the milk poured during the abhishekam is said to visibly turn blue, which is considered a miracle by devotees. Offerings often include Urad dal and blue cloth.
