Anjel Perumal Temple
Tirunelveli
Presiding Deity:
Anjel Perumal
The Anjel Perumal Temple, located in Agaram village near Vallanadu in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district, is a significant Vishnu temple with a unique single-stone sculpture of the Dashavatara.
Deities and legend
The presiding deity is Anjel Perumal, a form of Lord Vishnu, who faces east. The festival deities are Anjel Perumal along with his consorts, Sri Devi and Sri Bhoodevi. The temple also houses shrines for Sri Mahaganapathy, Dharmasastha, and Lord Krishna.
Legend says that a local artist named Mithrasaha performed plays about Lord Vishnu's ten incarnations (Dasavataram). Impressed with his and his wife Chandramalini's unwavering devotion in their old age, Lord Vishnu appeared before them, revealing all ten of his incarnations in a single vision. He also taught them the sacred 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' mantra. The temple's single-stone Dasavatara sculpture commemorates this divine appearance.
Significance
As a "Dasavatara Sthalam," the temple is considered an important site for remedial prayers (pariharams). Bathing in the sacred Tambirabarani River, which flows nearby, is believed to hold the same spiritual benefit as bathing in the holy Ganga River. The temple is also considered a Parihara Sthalam for those with Pitru Dosham (ancestral curses), offering a powerful alternative to visiting Kasi in North India.
