Kamakhya Temple
Guwahati

Presiding Deity:
Kamakhya Devi

The Kamakhya Temple, located on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, Assam, is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India. Unlike other temples with an idol, the sanctum contains a cave with a yoni-shaped stone, symbolizing the creative and fertile power of the goddess. The temple is a prominent center for Tantric practices and draws pilgrims and mystics from around the world.

Deities

Goddess Kamakhya: The main deity is Kamakhya, a form of Goddess Shakti. She is known as the "Bleeding Goddess" because the temple celebrates her yearly menstruation during the Ambubachi Mela.

Ten Mahavidyas: The temple complex also houses separate shrines for the ten Mahavidyas, or wisdom goddesses, including Kali, Tara, and Tripura Sundari.

Associated Deities: There are also temples dedicated to various forms of Shiva and Vishnu within the complex, reflecting a blend of religious traditions.

Legend

The temple's legend is tied to the myth of Shiva and his consort, Sati. After Sati's self-immolation in her father's sacrificial fire, a grief-stricken Shiva carried her corpse, performing the destructive cosmic dance of Tandava. To stop him, Vishnu dismembered Sati's body with his Sudarshana Chakra. The spot where Sati's yoni (genitals and womb) fell became the site of the Kamakhya Temple.

Significance and remedies

The Kamakhya Temple is a powerful symbol of the divine feminine power of creation and fertility. Devotees seek blessings for a variety of remedies and wishes:

Fertility and Relationships: Worshippers pray for blessings related to fertility, happy married life, and reconciliation with a lost lover.

Spiritual Growth: The temple is a key pilgrimage site for Tantric practitioners seeking spiritual mastery and enlightenment.
