The Jambukeswarar Temple, also known as Thiruvanaikaval, is a historic Hindu temple near Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. Built by the Early Chola king Kochengannan over 1,800 years ago, it is one of the five major Shiva temples, or Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, that represent the five elements of nature.
Deities and legend
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped as Jambukeswarar, and his consort Goddess Parvati, worshipped as Akilandeswari. The Shiva lingam, called Appu Lingam (water lingam), is partially submerged in a perennial underground water stream that flows around it.
A popular legend narrates how Goddess Parvati, as Akilandeswari, performed penance under a Jambu tree to atone for mocking Lord Shiva. To please him, she created a lingam from the water of the Cauvery River, and Shiva appeared to her, facing west as a guru (teacher) while she faced east as a student. The temple also has a tale involving an elephant and a spider, both devotees of Shiva. Their rivalry led to their deaths, but they were reborn: the spider as the Chola king who built the temple and the elephant as a soul that attained salvation.
Significance
As the Appu Sthalam, the temple's main significance lies in its representation of the water element. It is also revered as an Upadesa Sthalam, a place where Lord Shiva imparted sacred knowledge to Goddess Parvati, with their shrines facing each other to symbolize their teacher-student relationship. An unusual ritual occurs daily at noon when a priest dresses as Goddess Akilandeswari to perform puja in the sanctum, a sight considered very sacred by devotees.
Remedies and blessings
Devotees flock to the temple seeking various blessings and remedies. Worship at the Jambukeswarar temple is believed to grant intelligence, a good education, and fulfillment of desires related to marriage and children. The powerful Sri Chakra at Goddess Akilandeswari's shrine is a significant draw for those seeking to resolve karmic issues and find relief from the cycle of birth and death.
