Mahalakshmi Homam on Navratri
Venue :  Chennai
Date    :  October 14, 2026

Navratri, meaning "nine nights," is a Hindu festival celebrating the divine feminine, or Shakti. The central legend tells of Goddess Durga's fierce battle against the powerful buffalo demon, Mahishasura. After he gained a boon of invincibility, Mahishasura unleashed terror upon the universe, and the gods, unable to defeat him, combined their divine powers to create Durga. Riding a lion and armed with weapons from each deity, she fought the demon for nine nights, finally slaying him on the tenth day, an event celebrated as Vijayadashami or Dussehra.

The significance of Navratri transcends the mythological tale of good triumphing over evil. It is a period of spiritual cleansing and introspection, encouraging devotees to purify their minds and bodies through fasting, prayer, and meditation.

The festival is divided into three sets of three days, each dedicated to a different aspect of the goddess. The first three days focus on Durga to destroy negative qualities, the next three on Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity, and the final three on Saraswati for wisdom and knowledge.
