Rohini vrat
Venue :  Chennai
Date    :  March 06, 2024

Rohini Vrat is an important day of observance, particularly for women, in both Jain and Hindu traditions. It is celebrated on the day when the Rohini Nakshatra (a specific star constellation) is dominant after sunrise. This occurs approximately once every 27 days, resulting in around 12-13 Rohini Vrat days annually.Traditionally, Rohini Vrat is observed for three, five, or seven years continuously, with a ceremonial conclusion called Udyapana marking the completion of the fast. It's recommended to observe the fast for at least five years and five months. Rohini Vrat, therefore, symbolizes devotion, familial harmony, and the pursuit of both material and spiritual well-being through faith and adherence to established traditions.

Legend

While often associated with Jainism and Lord Vasupujya, a similar vrat is practiced in Hinduism with a different origin story. According to a Hindu legend, a sage visiting King Ashoka noticed his wife, Queen Rohini, was perpetually quiet and withdrawn. Upon the King's query, the sage narrated the story of Durgandha, a woman who in a past life, as a queen, had disrespectfully served a sage with bitter food, resulting in a curse of misfortune and subsequent rebirths as lesser beings. To overcome this hardship, Durgandha was advised to observe the Rohini Vrat by fasting and offering alms. She did so for five years and five months, eventually leading a happy life, which included rebirth as Queen Rohini. The sage then advised King Ashoka and Queen Rohini to observe the same vrat, which they did, and were blessed with a happy and worry-free life. This legend emphasizes the power of the fast to mitigate past wrongdoings and usher in a positive future.

Significance & Importance

In Hinduism, Rohini Vrat holds significant importance primarily for women who observe it for the longevity and good health of their husbands and the overall well-being of their families. The vrat also plays a role in fostering marital harmony and attracting prosperity into the household. Beyond these benefits, it is believed to help remove obstacles, alleviate sorrows, and bring wealth and abundance. The spiritual practices involved in observing Rohini Vrat, including fasting, prayers, and acts of charity, are thought to promote spiritual growth and inner purification. It also underscores the importance of celestial movements in Hinduism and how they can influence auspicious times for religious activities.
