Kalashtami is a sacred Hindu observance dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairav, the fierce and protective manifestation of Lord Shiva. Celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark lunar fortnight (Krishna Paksha) each month, it is a day for devotees to seek forgiveness, protection, and spiritual growth. The most important Kalashtami, known as Kalabhairav Jayanti, occurs in the month of Margashirsha (November-December).
Significance of Kalashtami
Lord of Time and Justice: As the "God of Time," Lord Kaal Bhairav governs the passage of time and the cycle of rebirth. Worshipping him is a reminder of life's impermanence and the importance of living a righteous life.
Destruction of Ego and Fear: The festival commemorates the legend where Lord Shiva took the form of Bhairav to destroy the ego and arrogance of Lord Brahma. This act symbolizes the annihilation of one's own ego and inner fears.
Protector of the Universe: Lord Bhairav is revered as the protector of the universe and the annihilator of evil forces. He is also considered the guardian of Shiva temples, most famously as the "Kotwal of Kashi" (Varanasi).
Benefits of worshipping on Kalashtami
Protection from negativity: Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Bhairav can create a protective shield against black magic, evil energies, and other malevolent influences.
Removal of obstacles: Worshipping on Kalashtami is said to help overcome obstacles and challenges that hinder success and prosperity.
Inner strength and courage: Praying to the fierce form of Shiva helps devotees conquer inner anxieties and fears, bestowing them with courage and confidence.
Spiritual growth: Observing the fast and performing puja is believed to cleanse sins and foster spiritual development and self-awareness.
Karmic relief: Rituals on this day can provide relief from planetary afflictions and help in resolving karmic debts, bringing peace and balance to one's life.
Good health and prosperity: Worshippers seek blessings for good health, financial stability, and overall well-being. Feeding dogs, Lord Bhairav's mount, is also considered highly auspicious.
