The festival signifies the triumph of good over evil and the establishment of dharma (righteousness).

Legend:

According to the Skanda Purana, the demon Surapadman, along with his brothers Simhamukhan and Tarakasura, defeated the Devas (gods) and seized control of the earth, spreading chaos and unrighteousness. The suffering gods implored Lord Shiva for help, who in turn created Lord Murugan to lead the Devas in battle against the demon army. Equipped with the powerful Vel (spear) gifted by his mother, Goddess Parvati, Lord Murugan fought a fierce, six-day battle against Surapadman. On the sixth day, Lord Murugan finally vanquished Surapadman with his divine Vel. As a symbol of mercy, Murugan transformed one half of the demon into a peacock, which became his vehicle (vahana), and the other half into a rooster, which became his emblem.
