Skanda Sashti or Kanda Sashti is a festival dedicated to Lord Muruga. The day is based on lunar month and falls on sixth day of the month of Karthika (Nov - Dec). A six day fast is observed from the first of Karthika up to the sixth day which is Soorasamharam which is the most important day of the festival. It marks the triumph of good over evil when Lord Murugan vanquished the demon Surapadman.
This is an important festival celebrated at all temples of Lord Muruga.

Skanda Sashti or Kanda Sashti, is a festival dedicated to Lord Murugan. During Kanda Sashti, devotees observe six days fasting which starts from first day or Pirathamai of Karthika lunar month and ends on the sixth day which is known as Soorasamharam day. Soorasamharam is the final and the most important day of the six days festivities. It is believed that Lord Murugan defeated Demon Surapadman on this day and the festival is observed every year to mark the victory of good over evil.

Lord Muruga signifies religion and yoga. Directing ones thoughts on Him awakens spiritual wisdom and propels souls towards evolving to greater consciousness. He is seen seated on the Manipura Chakra (Navel chakra or solar plexus) which is the centre of vitality, which controls our energy balance to strengthen and consolidate health. Worshipping him strengthens our will to evolve and brings detachment, willpower and contentment. The Vel or spear that he carries signifies the power to overcome darkness and ignorance.
