Shani Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Lord Shani and is also known as Shani Amavasya. Lord Shani,son of Lord Surya rules planet Saturn. 
It is observed on Amavasya during Jyeshtha month(May -June) according to the North Indian calendar. According to South Indian calendar Shani Jayanti falls on Amavasya during the month of Vaishakh (April - May). 
Devotees observe fast to propitiate Lord Shani and visit Shani temples to seek His blessing. It is believed that Lord Shani is fair and just and blesses devotees with good luck and fortune. People, who are not fortunate tp have His blessings, may not obtain benefits for years in spite of hard work. 
This is a very auspicious day to perform Homams to appease Lord Shani. The homam performed on this day alleviates the effect of Shani Dosha or Sade Sati. This day is also known as Shanishchara Jayanti.
