Kartik Somvar Vrata is one of the pujas observed during Mondays in the month of Karthik. Soma is another name for Lord Shiva. Someshvara is Lord Shiva who keeps Soma, the crescent in his matted hair. Karthik Somvar Vrata is observed to appease Lord ShivaThe fast is observed on all Mondays, but there are special Mondays when it is more auspicious to observe. According to sacred texts, Mondays in the month of Shravan and Karthika are the suited to observe the vrata. The Skanda Purana mentions the significance of Somavara vrata during the month of Karthik.This is observed predominantly in South India and in North India during the month of Shravan.
