Aadi Pooram is one of the major festivals celebrated in all Vaishnavite temple. It falls in the month of Aadi on Pooram nakshatra. This day is considered the birthday of Goddess Andal an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. 
According to a legend Goddess Lakshmi took human form on this day. A Vaishavite saint named,Periyalwar in Srivalliputur,prayed to Goddess Lakshmi for children and when he was ploughing the field found a beautiful child near a tulasi plant. He took the child home and named her Andal,and it was on a Pooram nakshatra in the month of Aadi. Therefore this day is celebrated as the birthday of Aandal.
Another legend describes how Periyalwar used to garland Lord Vishnu everyday. Aandal would wear the garland everyday before offering to Lord Vishnu and this was not known to her father.One day he made a new garland and took it to the temple and offered a new garland to the Lord. But the garland kept falling off inspite of his repeated efforts.Lord Vishnu appeared before Periyalwar and told that he wear only the garland which Aandal had worn explaining to him that she is none other than Goddess Lakshmi.
Aadi pooram is celebrated in a grand manner in Srivalliputur,Srirangam and in many other places. In Temples, women offer glass bangles to the Goddess and those bangles are distributed to all.
