Onam is the official state festival of Kerala, celebrated with immense joy and cultural grandeur across ten days in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September). It commemorates the legendary golden rule of the benevolent Asura King Mahabali and his subsequent annual homecoming from the underworld, granted by Lord Vishnu in his Vamana avatar.

Onam transcends all religious boundaries, uniting people in a massive celebration of peace, abundance, and equality. The ten days progress from Atham to the most crucial climax day, Thiruonam. Each home builds elaborate, multi-tiered floral carpets known as Pookalam at their entrances to welcome King Mahabali.

The festival showcases Kerala's rich heritage through thrilling Vallam Kali (snake boat races), traditional dances like Thiruvathira Kali and Pulikali (tiger dances), and the legendary grand feast called the Onam Sadya. This nine-course vegetarian feast features up to 30 diverse items served traditionally on a banana leaf, symbolizing the absolute bounty of nature.

Varalakshmi Vratham - 28th August 2026

Varalakshmi Vratham is a highly auspicious festival dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. Primarily celebrated in the South Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, it falls on the Friday immediately preceding the full moon day (Purnima) in the holy Hindu month of Shravana.

The core spiritual significance of this vratham lies in the belief that worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this day is equivalent to adoring the Ashtalakshmi—the eight divine forms representing Wealth, Earth, Wisdom, Love, Fame, Peace, Contentment, and Strength. Married women (Sumangalis) perform this ritual with absolute devotion for the longevity, health, and prosperity of their husbands and family members.

The ritual involves installing a sacred brass or silver pot (Kalasham), filled with rice or water, coins, and betel nuts. The pot is beautifully decorated with a coconut painted as the face of the Goddess, adorned with a silk saree and jewelry. Women tie a sacred yellow thread (Toram) with nine knots around their wrists after offering specialized sweets like Obattu and Kozhukattai.
