Basic Beliefs
Hinduism, also known as Sanatana Dharma or the "Eternal Way," is a diverse faith with no single founder or rigid set of beliefs. Instead, it's a rich tapestry of philosophies, traditions, and practices that have evolved over millennia. Despite this diversity, some fundamental concepts form a common thread through most Hindu traditions:
  • Brahman (Ultimate Reality): Many Hindus believe in one all-pervasive, supreme being or spiritual reality called Brahman. Brahman is considered the source of all existence, often described as formless, infinite, and transcendent. Various deities are seen as manifestations or aspects of this one supreme Brahman.
  • Atman (The Soul): Hindus believe in the concept of Atman, the eternal, unchanging soul or true self within every living being. In many philosophies like Advaita Vedanta, the goal is to realize the oneness of Atman and Brahman.
  • Dharma (Righteous Conduct and Duty): Dharma represents the moral and ethical principles that guide individuals in their actions, encompassing duties, virtues, and righteousness. It emphasizes living a life in harmony with universal laws and one's personal obligations.
  • Karma (Law of Cause and Effect): Karma is the principle that every action, thought, and intention creates consequences that shape one's future experiences, potentially across lifetimes. Good deeds lead to positive outcomes, while negative actions result in suffering.
  • Samsara (Cycle of Rebirth): The concept of Samsara refers to the continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth or reincarnation. Souls are bound to this cycle by their desires and karmic actions.
  • Moksha (Liberation): The ultimate goal in Hinduism is Moksha, or liberation from the cycle of Samsara. This is achieved through spiritual knowledge, self-realization, and transcending worldly attachments to attain union with the divine or Brahman.
These basic beliefs, along with a vast body of scriptures like the Vedas and Upanishads, various forms of worship, and a focus on inclusivity and tolerance, contribute to the richness and diversity of Hinduism.
