About Us

Who are we?
Actually, let's start with who we aren't. We are not a temple. We are not a religious movement. We are not funded by any religious institution. We are not pushing a particular spiritual agenda.
Saranam was founded by Mahesh Mohanan and Mervyn Jose, both engineers from Chennai,India, who after brief stints at various companies turned tech entrepreneurs developing e-commerce websites, till they hit upon the Saranam idea.
In the year 2000, Saranam India Private Limited was registered as a Private Limited Company with investments from Silkro [removed][removed] ute Indchem (the investment arm of the The Sanmar Group) and a few private investors.
What is our agenda?
To do whatever it takes to help people around the world meet their needs in the realm of religion, spirituality, morality and the Indian value system by providing inspiring information, products and services.
We facilitate performance of rituals at temples in India and wish to make Saranam.com the most comprehensive and unbiased source of information related to Hinduism, to create awareness and dispel the myths and misinformation that surround this great religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We hope to support this cause with revenue generated through the services we offer.
Our team insures that we provide reliable, fair, and insightful information. Though they were included in the team by virtue of their skill and reputation for fairness, they also happen to come from a wide variety of religious and spiritual traditions.
We know that exploring religion and spirituality can be difficult. We are often afraid to ask questions lest we be branded as ignorant. We hope that Saranam will provide a safe and inspiring place to explore your spiritual path.

Why 'Saranam'?

The term Saranam means means refuge, shelter or protection through absolute surrender. When we say ‘Saranam' or ‘Saranagati’ a whole hearted submission is intended. This is not simple surrender but a surrender of the mind, word and deed. It is a realisation that all our deeds and words are done by God and the fruits of all actions shall be left to him and we always remember that He is the force in us that makes us live and act. The Lord is the refuge for all who are suffering from the bondage of imperfection in life.

"If there is one term describing an essential aspect needed for success that can be found in all schools of spiritual practice, regardless of the methods prescribed and their scriptural foundation; one single aspect of approach or revelation of the Divine, the Self, the Eternal, the Perennial Ground of which all humans claim inheritance- it is “surrender”"
- Swami Sadasivananda Giri

“The ‘I’ casts off the illusion of ‘I’ and yet remains as ‘I’. Such is the paradox of Self-Realisation. The realised do not see any contradiction in it. Take the case of bhakti - I approach Iswara and pray to be absorbed in Him. I then surrender myself in faith and by concentration. What remains afterwards? In place of the original ‘I’, perfect self- surrender leaves a residuum of God in which the ‘I’ is lost. This is the highest form of devotion (parabhakti), prapatti, surrender or the height of vairagya…You give up this and that of ‘my’ possessions. If you giveup ‘I’ and ‘Mine’ instead, all are given up at a stroke. The very seed of  possession is lost. Thus the evil is nipped in the bud or crushed in the germ itself. Dispassion (vairagya) must be very strong to do this. Eagerness to do it must be equal to that of a man kept under water trying to rise up to the surface for his life.”
- Sri Ramana Maharshi

In Sanskrit the term Saranam means ‘Protector’ and also ‘home’. Since the Lord is the Ultimate Goal, Saranam, He is also the destination. The one who realizes Him comes to live in Him. He is the home to which the prodigal son ultimately returns. He is the Home for all creatures into which all disappear to rest and to revive during sleep.
