Thenupuriswarar Temple
Patteeswaram
Presiding Deity:
Thenupuriswarar
Thenupuriswarar Temple is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the holy village of Patteeswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. Shiva is worshiped as Thenupuriswarar, and is represented by the lingam. Goddess Parvati is depicted as Somakamalambigai. The temple is associated with the legend of Sambandar to whose view Nandi moved to have a direct view of the presiding deity.
The complex covers four acres and entry is through a seven tiered gopuram, the main gateway. The temple has a number of shrines, with those of Thenupuriswarar, his consort Somakamalambigai and Durga, being the most prominent. All the shrines of the temple are enclosed in large concentric rectangular granite walls.
The shrine to Goddess Durga is very popular as unlike other temples, Durga here is Shanta Swarupi (soft in look and grace) .
