Shiva is "The Auspicious One". He is the creator as well as the destroyer. He creates goodness and destroys evil. Shiva is the greatest of renouncers as well as the ideal lover. He destroys evil and protects the good. He bestows prosperity on worshipers although he is austere. He is omnipresent and resides in everyone as pure consciousness.
The snake is curled three times around the neck of the Lord and is looking towards His Left side. The three coils of the snake symbolize the past, present and future time in cycles.
Lord Shiva is usually depicted as sitting or meditating on a tiger skin. Lord Shiva is usually portrayed as wearing a tiger skin as garment. Tiger symbolically represents power. Shiva sitting on tiger skin and wearing it symbolically means that He is beyond all power and dominates over all the powers. This Idol is kept on East wall facing West.
He is called as Vyaghranatheshwara (Vyaghra means tiger + Natheswar means Lord), because he once had slain a demon, who had taken the form of a tiger.
In this idol, Lord ganesha Sitted on his lap is carved beautifully in heavy shinning brass.
