The ninth day of the bright half of Chaitra is the birthday of Lord Rama. Onn this day people sing devotional songs or bhajans in praise of the Lord and rock images of him in cradles to celebrate his birth.
The Tulsi Ramayan, the epic which recounts the story of Lord Rama is recited. Devotees crowd temples of Lord Rama on this day and Ayodhya, his birth place, is the focus of great celebration. Rathyatra or the chariot procession of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, brother Lakshmana and devotee Hanuman are taken out of many temples.
